Atlanta Hawks Secure No. 1 Pick in 2024 NBA Draft Lottery

Atlanta Hawks secure No. 1 overall pick in NBA draft, despite 3% chance, defying expectations in June 27's lottery.

2024 NBA Draft Lottery: On Sunday, the Atlanta Hawks secured the right to select the No. 1 overall selection in the NBA draft, which will take place on June 27. Atlanta entered the 2024 draft lottery with a mere 3% chance of securing the top pick, which defied all expectations.

The top four were completed by the Houston Rockets, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Washington Wizards.

The Hawks qualified for the play-in tournament despite finishing 36-46 the previous season but were unable to advance to the postseason. They finished fifth in the league in terms of points per game (118.3) but had extreme difficulty defensively. Atlanta’s 120.6 points per game was the second-worst mark in the NBA.

This will be the first time since 1975, when the team selected David Thompson out of North Carolina State, that the team has selected at No. 1. A member of a young nucleus that also includes guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray will be selected.

It is believed that the 2024 NBA draft will be among the worst in recent history. Although few prognosticators identify a superstar-caliber player among the pool of prospects, numerous others can assist in the turnaround of a franchise.

Alex Sarr, a forward/center for the Perth Wildcats who is 7 feet 1 inch tall, has a wingspan of 7 feet 4 inches, and a standing reach of 9 feet 2 inches, is one option. Guard Nikola Topic of Crvena Zvezda, forward Zacharie Risacher of JL Bourg, center Donovan Clingan of UConn, forward Matas Buzelis of G League Ignite, and guard Robert Dillingham of Kentucky are also in contention.
