Californians to Receive Extra CalFresh Benefits in 2024 for Summer

Governor Gavin Newsom announced CalFresh Benefits in 2024, a federal food program aimed at ensuring low-income children in California have sufficient summer sustenance.

CalFresh Benefits in 2024: A substantial initiative to combat food insecurity among children in California was just announced by Governor Gavin Newsom. The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is introducing SUN Bucks, a federal food program that guarantees access to sufficient sustenance during the summer for children from low-income families.

Congress enacted the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 in December 2022, causing the SUN Bucks program.

14 Republican-led states have refused to allocate funding for comparable initiatives, despite their stated commitment to family welfare. As a response, we are implementing this initiative.

“For kids who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs, summer break can be a stressful and challenging time,” Governor Gavin Newsom indicated.

“Building on our ongoing efforts to support healthy food access for children year-round, I’m proud that California is partnering with the Biden-Harris Administration to provide SUN Bucks for our families so that no child faces hunger during the summer months.”

What is the total amount of additional food stamps that Californians are receiving for the summer?

SUN Bucks will give $120 per child, which equals $40 per month, during the three-month summer period when schools typically close. The objective of this financial assistance is to mitigate food insecurity and guarantee that children have consistent access to nutritious meals during the summer vacation.

SUN Bucks immediately enrolls children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application, alternative income form, or CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal.

California promptly implemented this new food assistance program, making it one of the first states to provide financial support to families in need.

During the summer months, California offers the Summer Meal Programs, in addition to the SUN Bucks program, to provide supplementary meal opportunities for children in need.

Families can discover summer meal sites in their communities by visiting the Summer Meal Service Sites webpage or utilizing the CA Meals for Kids App.
