Family Day 2024 (Canada): History and Tips for Celebration

Family Day, a statutory holiday in several Canadian provinces, is observed on the third Monday of February, with Louis Riel Day, Heritage Day, and Islander Day also celebrated.

Family Day 2024 (Canada): Family Day, observed on the third Monday of February, is not recognized as a federal holiday in Canada. However, it is observed as a statutory holiday in several Canadian provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan, where it is celebrated as Family Day.

Manitoba celebrates Louis Riel Day, Nova Scotia observes Heritage Day, and Prince Edward Island celebrates Islander Day. For the sake of this discussion, we will refer to the holiday as Family Day.

History of Family Day

The history of Family Day dates back to 1990, when Alberta became the first province to observe it. Ontario and Saskatchewan followed suit in the subsequent years. British Columbia joined in 2012, shifting its observance to align with neighboring provinces.

New Brunswick declared it a holiday in 2018. In 2007, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia became the first provinces to observe it. Yukon already had a similar holiday, Yukon Heritage Day, which remained unchanged.

Unlike holidays such as Christmas or New Year’s Day, Family Day does not have a long-established tradition. However, many Canadians use the three-day weekend to spend extra time with their families, engaging in activities like road trips, family gatherings, and winter sports.
