February 17th Revolution 2024 (Libya): The 17th of February is a Libyan national holiday known as the February 17th Revolution. Often referred to as the ‘Day of Revolt,’ this significant occurrence in Libya’s history signifies the onset of the decline under Colonel Gaddafi’s autocratic regime, which spanned almost four decades.

On this day, Libyans reflect on the sacrifices and challenges they have faced in their quest for a democratic Libya that upholds human rights. Throughout this period, Libya experienced a succession of turbulent occurrences. Many people believe that the Arab Spring played a significant role in sparking the revolution in Libya on February 17th.

History Of February 17th Revolution

The conflicts that ensued when Libyans demanded a regime change have left an indelible mark on their psyche. Libya was under Italian colonial authority and became an independent nation in 1951, with Idris I becoming its first king. Idris I was a politician and religious leader whose government was unpopular because of his reactionary nature.

In 1969, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi overthrew King Idris I in a coup d’etat, intending to advance the country to greater heights. Gaddafi governed for four decades, making him the longest-serving leader in Libya. During his reign, all social organizations and political parties were disallowed.

In 2010, the Arab Spring—an alliance of revolutionists, agitators, and activists—unseated many rulers in Arab nations, commencing in Tunisia and Egypt, where leaders gave in to the demands of the masses and willingly stepped down. However, Gaddafi exhibited a stern approach to the Arab Spring’s ravaging revolution in his country.

Benghazi residents protested his regime for the first time on February 15, 2011. A horrific incident at the police station killed several nonviolent protesters. On February 17, the ‘Day of Revolt’, organizers rallied hundreds of protesters across.  Demonstrations took place at Benghazi, Darnah, Ajdabiya, Zintan, and elsewhere. Gaddafi’s security forces fired live bullets at dozens of protesters, resulting in the start of a civil war.

Later in 2011, demonstrators defeated Gaddafi and had him captured and executed at Sirte to end the civil war and bring about change. Ali Zeidan won the prime minister position in the 2012 general election.
