In 1607, the British established their initial colony in Jamestown, Virginia. On April 12, 1776, however, everything changed. North Carolina passed a series of resolutions advocating for absolute independence from the British Crown, becoming the first state to do so. This decision was made in Halifax, a municipality located just off the Roanoke River. Hence, the delegates of the Continental Congress were urged to advance the cause of a proclamation of independence through the ‘Halifax Resolves’. The American Declaration of Independence was ultimately ratified on July 4, 1776.

Halifax Day is observed annually on April 12 to mark the first occasion a state authorized its delegates to a Continental Congress to vote in favor of independence. During the celebrations in the Halifax Historic District, guests can participate in guided excursions while adorned in period attire.
