Holocaust Memorial Day 2024: Remembering the Past, Honoring the Victims

Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 honors Holocaust victims, commemorating Nazi Germany's atrocities against minorities and Jewish population, based on antisemitism and legislation, denying them civil and human rights.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2024: Holocaust Memorial Day is annually observed on January 27. It is a memorial day honoring the victims of the Holocaust, on which Nazi Germany perpetrated atrocities against innumerable members of other minorities in addition to one-third of the Jewish population. It had been suggested that the Holocaust represented an effort to execute a “final solution” to the Jewish dilemma. Through legislation, persecution, and propaganda, the Nazis deprived German Jews of their civil and human rights.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2024: History

In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, Germany invaded Poland, subjecting an estimated two million Polish Jews to mistreatment and forced labor. Thousands of Jews perished in the initial months of the occupation. Following the invasion, Polish Jews established connections with specific communities referred to as “ghettos.”

The Nazis initiated the mass genocide of European Jews as their “Final Remedy to the Jewish Problem.” Einsatzgruppen and other extermination squads carried out public executions of Jews throughout Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. By the end of 1941, the Nazis had a way to continue their systematic atrocities thanks to the establishment of the first eradication camp in Chelmno, Poland.

The day commemorates the massacre of millions of Jews, including approximately six million, by the Nazi regime and its contemporaries. The U.N. General Assembly adopted Resolution 60/7 on November 1, 2005. The proposal emerged after a special session held in early January of that year, specifically on January 24, to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration centers and, by extension, the concluding event of the Holocaust.
