Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Puja Vidhi
1. Essentials for the Janmashtami Puja
You must carry home all the necessary puja essentials before conducting the Janmashtami puja. The following are the necessary materials for pooja:
- Swing for Bal Gopal
- Pooja Chowki
- A new red cloth for Chowki
- Framed Photo of Krishna
- Panchamrat
- Asana
- Ganga Jal
- Ghee Lamp
- Incense Sticks: Chandan
- Raw Rice
- Tulsi Leaves
- Prasadam
- Clothing for Your Krishna Idol
- A Flower Garland
2. Wake up and bathe
On Janmashtami, early-morning devotion to Lord Krishna is essential. People use the sacrosanct Ganga jal to bathe the Krishna idol at home, although they can use ordinary water. They present the idol with new clothing for the rest of the celebrations and adorn it with jewelry.
3. Bhog or Food Offerings
After performing the initial pooja, one must present food items like milk, fruit, and kheera to the lord, placing them in a clean bowl next to the venerated Krishna idol and arranging them on a clean, white cloth.
4. Achaman Puja
The Krishna pooja includes singing aarti and mantras, reading Lord Krishna’s 108 names, and burning diyas. A Ganga jal is held in one hand, dripped over the right while reciting “om achyutaya Namah,” and water is consumed silently to perform the puja. Recite “om anantaya namah” and “om govindaya namah.” Finally, wet and dry both palms.
5. The Milk Bath
Use Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishad mantras for “Brahma Samhita”. Clean and dry the Krishna idol after bathing with milk, ghee, and petals. Wet the idol.
6. Pooja Following Bathing
Begin chanting the mantra “Shubham karoti kalyanam” while igniting a diya and applying sandalwood paste to the idol. Then, recite “Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu” and then any Krishna bhajan of your choosing. While the mantras mentioned above are being recited, move an incense stick around the idol seven times in a circular motion. Repeat the same procedure with an aarti lamp.
7. Kumkum at the Feet of Lord Krishna
Place the Kumkum at the feet of the deity and then use the same Kumkum to touch your forehead. Subsequently, you may distribute the prasadana kum kum to other devotees who are present for the prayers. This kumkum, or tilak, can sanctify and purify the body. One has the opportunity to request absolution and blessings from the Lord during this specific phase of the Puja Vidhi.
8. Depart the Offerings for the Lord.
Lord Krishna offerings can be stored or submerged in water before delivery. Reciting “Hare Krishna” or “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasu Devaya” before twilight is essential to the Janmashtami Puja Vidhi.
Specific requests can bring Krishna Bhagwan’s blessings, but they must be done with purity and no malice. Only people with good intentions will obtain blessings from any deity. Receiving these rewards requires cleanliness in mind, body, and spirit.

Krishna Janmashtami: History & Importance
On Janmashtami, Hindus believe Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu and the son of Devaki and Vasudev, was born. He had to defeat Devaki’s brother Kansa, Mathura’s demon king.
Kansa locked up her sister and husband to kill their children since a prognosis indicated their eighth kid would kill her. Kansa killing six of their children is awful.
Princess Rohini was pregnant with her seventh child when Balrama was miraculously transferred from Devaki’s belly to hers. Krishna, their seventh child, was born into a tense household. This helped Vasudeva save the baby, who was transferred to Nand Baba and Yashodha’s Vrindavan house.
Vasudeva returned to the castle, converted the infant into a girl, and gave Kansa the daughter. After Kansa injured the infant, she became Durga and warned him he would die soon. Thus, Janmashtami commemorates Lord Krishna’s birth.
Lord Krishna represents godliness, love, and goodness; hence, his devotees revere him on this day. His life and teachings motivate them to follow dharma, karma, and bhakti.
