Lineman Appreciation Day: History

April 18 is National Lineman Appreciation Day. Since it has been a profession for more than a century, it is only appropriate that the more than 115,000 line workers in the United States have a day to honor the dedication they provide to the country’s estimated 155,000,000 electrical customers.

This commemoration of the individuals who maintain the functionality of our power has been held for several years. Senate Resolution 95 of April 10, 2013, designated April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day. This occurred after Hurricane Sandy struck 24 states in the United States in 2012, resulting in the downing of electrical lines and causing an estimated $65 billion in damage. In the aftermath of this catastrophe, line crews from all over the country volunteered in large numbers to assist in the restoration of power systems by reconstructing them from the foundation. This commitment to advancing the nation is what motivated the 113th Congress to approve the legislation designating these indispensable professionals as national holidays.

Lineworkers, who risk their lives daily, deserve special recognition and encouragement. Line work is one of the most hazardous occupations in the United States, with employees working all hours, in adverse weather, and in perilous environments to maintain power to homes and businesses.
