Early Life
Shayok was born in Ottawa, Ontario, to a Sudanese father named Makur and a Canadian mother named Helena. Makur, a Sudanese national, competed in basketball at the University of Dayton. Marial has four siblings, two of whom competed in the NCAA as collegiate basketball players. His older brother Shayok played at the IMG Academy and later at Bradley University, while his sister, Yar, played for the University of Detroit Mercy and subsequently contracted with a professional team in France.
Shayok began playing basketball at the age of seven, occasionally at the YMCA and other times on the playground. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Penny Hardaway, and Dwyane Wade were his preferred players during his childhood.
Career in high school
Joe Mantegna served as Shayok’s coach at Blair Academy. The Star-Ledger selected him for the First Team All-Prep. When he graduated from high school, Shayok signed with Marquette; however, he never participated in a game for the team.
Academic career during college
Shayok averaged 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds as a freshman at Virginia. He averaged 4.3 points and 1.9 rebounds the next season. In the Big 12 Conference tournament finals on March 16, 2019, Shayok scored 15 points in a 78-66 win over Kansas and was awarded MVP and First-Team All-Big 12.

Career in the professional field
Philadelphia 76ers (2019–2020)
The Philadelphia 76ers selected Shayok with the 54th overall selection in the 2019 NBA draft. Shayok was signed to a two-way contract by the 76ers on July 7, 2019, under which he would alternate between the 76ers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. In three games for the Blue Coats, Shayok averaged 35.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, including 42 points against the Greensboro Swarm. As a result, he was named G League Player of the Week on November 18. In a 110-109 victory over the Capital City Go-Go on December 6, Shayok tallied 31 points on 13-of-23 shooting.
On January 20, 2020, he scored 29 points and dished out six assists in a 119-109 victory over the South Bay Lakers. In a 112-101 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on February 6, Shayok made his NBA debut for the 76ers, hitting a three-pointer. Shayok averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game during the 2019–20 G League season, which was curtailed. He shot 46% from the field and 36% from three-point range.
