National Child help Day of Hope: History

Established in 1959 by Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, Child help is the preeminent and most ancient non-profit organization in the United States. Its primary objectives are the treatment and prevention of child maltreatment. Child help operates the sole national helpline for child abuse and neglect, the Child help National Child Abuse Hotline, and provides treatment programs for abuse victims across the nation. International Orphans initially knew the organization. O’Meara and Fedderson founded it when they were on a government-sponsored benevolence tour in Japan and assumed the responsibility of providing assistance to eleven Japanese-American children. They returned to the United States in 1961 to raise funds for the cause, and in that region, International Orphans constructed two sizable orphanages for Asian American children in the Tokyo area.

In 1976, O’Meara and Fedderson established the “Children’s Village U.S.A.”, an anti-child abuse organization. It protected and provided treatment and therapy for children who had endured grievous abuse. O’Meara and Fedderson, in collaboration with President Jimmy Carter, established April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1979.In 1983, Child help U.S.A. subsequently renamed Children’s Village U.S.A., and they established Child help International to support international initiatives. Children’s Village U.S.A. established 4-A-Child (1-800), the first national toll-free hotline. It continues to function around-the-clock, every day of the week. Professional crisis counselors provide a variety of support resources through the hotline. In 2000, Congress declared the first Wednesday of April National Child Help Day of Hope. In honor of maltreated and neglected children, people nationwide pray and observe silence.
