National Haiku Day 2024: Learn about its Activities and Importance

National Haiku Day honors the art form, a Japanese poetry style with three lines, syllable scheme "five-seven-five," and focus on natural phenomena, seasons, and transient aesthetics.

National Haiku Day 2024: April 17 is National Haiku Day, an event organized by The Haiku Foundation to honor the art form. Haiku is an antiquated style of Japanese poetry composed of three lines and employing the syllable scheme “five-seven-five”; however, this syllable arrangement is disputed as it is considered a Western approach to haiku instruction.

Haikus from Japan count not only syllables but also notes. Haiku generally centers on natural phenomena, the transitory essence of seasons, or transient aesthetics. They employ images rather than metaphors, which may cause them to resemble their high school English teacher. Their short duration further contributes to their succinctness. Consider one!
