National Pet Day 2024: April 11 is National Pet Day, but those who own pets realize that they celebrate their companion every day! Therefore, comfort your hedgehog, form a rapport with your rabbit, and feed your cat catnip. You are not the only one who is delighted by that animal. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has collaborated with various organizations for the past decade on research aimed at identifying the mental and physical advantages of companionship. As it turns out, pets not only have the ability to win our affection, but they also reduce cortisol, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels, which are all beneficial to cardiovascular health.
Animal welfare advocate and pet and family lifestyle specialist Colleen Paige founded National Pet Day in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives. However, she wanted to highlight the predicament of many shelter animals of diverse types awaiting adoption. She recommended that purebred cat and dog buyers contact rescue groups to avoid breeders. “Avoid shopping!” “Adopt!” is the holiday motto.
The US Humane Society estimated in 1973 that 13 million dogs and cats visit shelters annually. Some animals were taken by the government, surrendered by owners who couldn’t care for them, or strayed. Approximately 6.5 million companion animals visit shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Additionally, 1.6 million dogs and cats find permanent homes.
Colleen’s vacation began in the US and spread worldwide. The UK, Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, Guam, and Scotland mark this day.
Additionally, celebrities support the cause. Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Ellen De Generes, Ricky Gervais, Cee Lo Green, Jimmy Fallon, Willy Nelson, Kevin Bacon, and Seth Myers have promoted National Pet Day.
Social media has also promoted Colleen’s cause and spread joy. A picture of Bo, one of the two Portuguese water dogs in the White House, that President Barack Obama shared on social media touched politicians on both sides of the aisle. Bo was rehomed because he was estranged from a Texas family’s elder dog.
