World Cloud Security Day 2024: Discover its Fascinating History and Facts

World Cloud Security Day 2024 aims to raise awareness about the increasing risks businesses face due to remote and hybrid work, emphasizing the importance of bring-your-own-device policies and addressing shadow IT.

World Cloud Security Day 2024:  The purpose of World Cloud Security Day, which is observed on April 3, is to inform IT and security executives about the increasing risks that businesses face due to remote and hybrid work, as well as bring-your-own-device policies.

32% of remote workers utilize apps or software not authorized by IT for work purposes, and 92% of remote employees complete work-related duties on their tablets or smartphones, according to a recent report by Lookout. In addition to the accessed corporate data, these devices, applications, and software are invisible to IT (shadow IT), which significantly increases the security risk for an organization.

World Cloud Security Day is a holiday observed in support of Lookout, a company that provides endpoint to cloud security. Through its unified, cloud-native security platform, the organization ensures the protection of data across various devices, applications, networks, and databases. As a result, it has earned the trust of governments, corporations, and millions of consumers across the globe.

World Cloud Security Day: History

The cloud is now an essential piece of infrastructure for the majority of businesses. 61% of U.S.-based organizations migrated their workloads to the cloud in 2020 to facilitate remote work and corporate data accessibility. 60% of all corporate data was stored in the cloud as of 2002. Furthermore, although the cloud offers enhanced flexibility and the potential for increased productivity, it has also brought about risks that are difficult to discern. Along with the proliferation of cloud operations, the prevalence of security threats has also escalated.

Threat actors consistently adapt their strategies to exploit remote workers who connect to the cloud via smartphones, tablets, and the public internet. As an alternative to targeting desktop computers with phishing emails, malicious actors are customizing their social engineering campaigns through the use of messaging applications such as social media platforms, SMS text messages, and others.

The proliferation of cloud services has introduced the challenge of monitoring the settings and determining when updates are necessary for each service. Consequently, the prevalence of misconfigurations and vulnerabilities increases, providing adversaries with an additional avenue to compromise the data of an organization or an individual stored in the cloud.

In recognition of the dangers associated with remote work and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies, Lookout is organizing the inaugural World Cloud Security Day.

World Cloud Security Day: FAQs

Define cloud security

A collection of security measures intended to safeguard cloud-based data, applications, and infrastructure. These measures guarantee the authentication of users and devices, the control of access to data and resources, and the protection of privacy. Additionally, they conduct surveillance of the cloud environments to identify any possible vulnerabilities.

Why should cloud security be of concern to me?

Fundamental changes have occurred in the way individuals labor and play since the advent of the cloud. This access is also available to attackers, although connecting with family and friends or collaborating with business partners, purveyors, and colleagues is considerably more convenient. Both individuals and organizations must recognize that there are novel risks to their data that they may not have previously been cognizant of.

What causes incidents in cloud security?

Cloud security incidents may arise as a result of a multitude of factors, encompassing software vulnerabilities, cyber-attacks, and human fallibility. Organizations and individuals must conduct thorough assessments of the security protocols employed by prospective cloud service providers to safeguard their data.

Human error will account for 99 percent of all cloud security failures through 2025, per Gartner. When organizations oversee dozens of applications, misconfiguration becomes inevitable and an additional entry point for malicious actors to exploit. The same applies to data leakage and exfiltration. Since content sharing is now so simple, it is also simple to disclose data maliciously or unintentionally. Phishing and other attacks that exploit the use of personal devices to access the cloud can result in compromised credentials or malware infection.

The greatest dangers of operating in the cloud

Risk 1: Diverse and hybrid clouds

The complexity and likelihood of misconfigurations are heightened due to the cloud’s adaptability, which permits diverse configurations. Intersystem misconfigurations result in exploitable voids in the structure.

Risk 2: Deficits inherent in access management solutions

management of a greater quantity of human and service identities is necessitated by cloud configurations. Some organizations implement security by utilizing access management solutions that incorporate step-up authentication. The issue is that these tools are incapable of safeguarding app data and do not monitor or regulate user activity once they have entered your environment.

Lack of cloud-relevant skills and expertise constitutes the third risk

Cloud usage growth necessitates the allocation of supplementary IT and security resources. An inadequate workforce is a significant obstacle in the protection of data, applications, and systems.

Fourth Risk: Dependence on conventional appliance-based instruments

Historically, the deployment of appliance-based tools, including virtual private network (VPN), on-premises secure web gateway (SWG), and data loss prevention (DLP), has occurred in isolation, resulting in breaches of security. IT security is simplified through the consolidation of multiple discrete solutions using a cloud-delivered security platform approach.
