World Thinking Day: History

Since 1926, WAGGGS, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., and other member organizations have celebrated World Thinking Day. Celebrate your varied global sisterhood today. The origins of World Thinking Day are fascinating.

At the 4th World Conference in 1926, delegates from around the world met at Camp Edith Macy, now the Edith Macy Conference Center, in New York and resolved to create a guide and Girl Scout Day. Thinking Day was the birthday of scout and guide founder Lord Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave.

Later in 1932, a Belgian delegate proposed that girls raise the World Thinking Day Fund for the organization to show their gratitude. Lord Baden-Powell wrote to all guides and Girl Scouts worldwide to donate a penny since a penny buys a loaf of bread.

The Dubai Conference in 1999 was renamed Thinking Day, ‘World Thinking Day.’ This has become a global event that inspires movement members to consider greater issues.
