World Voice Day: History

The human voice has been a characteristic of the species since its inception. Documenting the origins and evolution of the human voice throughout millennia of human history could be challenging, if not impossible. Nevertheless, the biological construct theories on the human voice provide a satisfactory elucidation of its functioning, which we deem sufficient for this discourse.

The human voice comprises a collection of phonemes generated via the vocal tract. This results in, among other things, the following behaviors: speaking, singing, giggling, sobbing, shouting, and humming. The frequency of the human voice is particularly significant in the production of sounds, wherein particular vocal folds or chords serve as the principal sound generators. Additional mechanisms by which humans generate sounds from the same anatomical region typically include “unvoiced consonants,” clicks, murmuring, and whistling.

The human voice produces music through its lungs, voice box, and articulators. The sound production equation requires the lungs to pump ventilation and pressure to vibrate the vocal folds. The vocal folds make laryngeal sounds by using air pressure from the lungs to generate pulses. The laryngeal muscles adjust vocal fold length and tension to produce a pitch and tone. The tongue, palate, cheek, and lips are the vocal tract’s articulators above the larynx. They filter laryngeal sounds and can increase or decrease them.
