National Peeps Day 2024: April 5 is the annual observance of National Peeps Day, and we are ecstatic to partake in some delectable delights in honor of the holiday. We sincerely hope that your excitement is equal to ours. Although commonly linked to Easter and, more recently, Halloween, Peeps celebrate their anniversary in April. In addition to the lovely blossoms and April precipitation, springtime is also Peeps season. Peeps are an all-time favorite among children and adults alike; these vibrantly colored, marshmallow chicks and rabbits coated in sugar are simply irresistible. It comes as no surprise that since their inception in 1953, these spongy, candied confections with eyeballs made of edible wax and manufactured in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, have been everyone’s favorite. You simply cannot quit at even one or two!
Peeps were first introduced in 1953 through the acquisition of the Rodda confectionery Company and its line of handmade marshmallow chicks by Just Born, a confectionery company founded in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and owned by Russian immigrant Sam Born. Soon after the acquisition, Bob Born, the progeny of Sam Born, supervised the reduction of the marshmallow manufacturing process from approximately twenty-seven hours to six minutes through automation. Additionally, Bob introduced a modification in 1955 wherein he eliminated the wings that had been affixed to every Peep, thereby augmenting the efficiency of large-scale manufacturing. Additionally, Just Born produces additional candies, including Mike & Ike’s, Peanut Chews, and Hot Tamales.
A family-guarded, time-honored recipe for peeps, which includes gelatin, granulated sugar, liquid sugar, corn syrup, and vanilla extract, has remained largely unchanged since the brand’s inception. The company initially introduced the confection in the form of yellow, pink, and white chicks; however, they subsequently expanded their color palette to include blue, green, pink, lavender, and orange. During the 1960s, the organization expanded its product line beyond the conventional chick shapes by incorporating seasonal themes. Puppies are currently available in a variety of animal forms, including spirits and rabbits.
Between 1999 and 2002, Peeps enthusiasts were also introduced to new varieties, including chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Cotton candy, gingerbread, pancakes and syrup, and root beer float are some additional varieties. To expand the Peeps product line, Just Born introduced Peeps Lip Balm in four flavors in 2009: grape, strawberry, vanilla, and cotton candy. Furthermore, the organization has allocated resources towards the manufacturing of an extensive range of fashion and accessory products, including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, plush animals, golf gloves, and umbrellas.
