Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day: History

Girl Scouting in America was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low as the Girl Guide troop. It was a gathering of eighteen young women in Savannah, Georgia, to provide “something for all girls” to the United States and the globe. Her objective was to motivate American young women to leave their families to participate in community service, gain exposure to the great outdoors, and cultivate their independence and resourcefulness. Since its inception and continuing to this day, it has served as a platform for the development of young women.

Juliette Low, who postulated a merger between the Girl Guides and the Camp Fire Girls in late 1912, saw her proposal denied in January 1913 on account of the Camp Fire Girls’ greater size at the time.

Following the unsuccessful merger attempt, she endeavored to consolidate the organization with the Girl Scouts of America, an organization founded in Des Moines, Iowa, by Clara Lisetor-Lane. She believed that the similarities between the two organizations would facilitate the merger. Lisetor-Lane, however, perceived Low as a counterfeit of her organization and issued a threatening lawsuit. This did not go over well. Later, Lisetor-Lane’s organization fails as a result of insufficient financial resources.

The Girl Scouts of America became Girl Guides of America and relocated its headquarters to Washington, D.C., in 1913. On March 16, 1947, the organization underwent a name change to its present configuration, Girl Scouts of the United States of America (G.S.U.S.A.). At present, Girl Scouts have garnered the participation of over 50 million American women. Furthermore, the organization’s membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts grants it access to a global network of over 10 million members spanning 146 countries.
