Scripps Spelling Bee: History
The National Spelling Bee was founded in 1925 to promote literacy. Nine newspapers organized the first spelling bee. An estimated 11 million students use literacy programs annually, 90 years after their launch. Frank Neuhauser won the first National Spelling Bee by spelling “gladiolus.”
The spelling contest has been held annually, except in the years 1943–1945 during World War II and 2020 due to the global pandemic. The E.W. Scripps Company acquired the rights to the national program in 1941. The corporation hosts the bee at a convention center or hotel in Washington, D.C., on a non-profit basis. The spelling contest is held annually, with the dates fluctuating annually; however, it is consistently scheduled for the week following Memorial Day Weekend.
All pupils who have not completed the eighth grade and have reached the age of fifteen are eligible to participate in the spelling bee competition. Students who have previously won the National Spelling Bee are also ineligible. The event’s objective is educational; it is designed to foster the development of children’s vocabulary, promote the English language, and encourage proper usage.
Organized by the E.W. Scripps Company and sponsored by 291 partners in the United States, Canada, Guam, Jamaica, Ghana, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is the longest-running educational program in the USA.
