Mizoram State Day 2024 (India): Mizoram State Day, celebrated on February 20, marks the formal establishment of the state of Mizoram in the northeastern part of India, bordered by Bangladesh and Myanmar. The name Mizoram is derived from the local inhabitants known as Mizo. Historically, the British, intrigued by the region’s resources like milk and tea, formally established the state after India gained independence.

Background for Mizoram State Day:

The Mizos of north-eastern India are thought to have arrived from China in the 16th century. Originally Kukis, they became New Kukis. The 18th and 19th centuries saw many tribal raids and retaliations against the Mizos.

The Mizo Common People’s Union was founded in 1946 and renamed the Mizo Union. The Mizo Union sought to unite Tripura and Manipur with its Assam District Council. In 1955, tribal chiefs founded the Eastern India Union (EITU) to oppose the SRC recommendations. The Mizos’ origins are unknown; however, they may have gone from China to Burma and ultimately to India.

The Mizos, an Indian tribe, learned agriculture and construction from the Burmese in the Kabaw Valley. In the early 14th century, they built villages and named them after their clans in the Chin Hills on the Indo-Burmese boundary. The 1959 Mizo famine devastated Mizo Hills, resulting in the 1960 Mizo National Famine Front (MNFF).

While the MNFF desired sovereign independence for Greater Mizoram, unrest led to the creation of the Union Territory of Mizoram in 1972. The 1987 creation of Mizoram State opened a new era in Indian politics, with the Centre and MNF supporting peace and development. The MNF conceded weaponry and received firearms from the Union Government to attain statehood
