Go For Broke Day: History
The craps term ‘Go for broke’ comes from the Hawaiian Pidgin word ‘wager all’ or ‘bet all in a single roll.’ The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the US Army performed valiantly throughout World War II, and the slang slogan became a symbol of dedication, perseverance, laboriousness, and ethics.
It embodies doing one’s utmost in any endeavor one undertakes and persevering in the face of obstacles or difficulties. After World War II’s Pearl Harbor attack, the government and public worried about Nisei, or Japanese Americans in the US. Within weeks of the incident, everyone suspected Japanese American draft-age guys of being hostile extraterrestrials.
The above circumstances led the Nisei to fight racial prejudice and show their patriotism, love, and willingness to serve their country. Many Japanese Americans (called “Nisei”) were allowed to serve in the 4442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion, 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion, and Military Intelligence Service after petitioning.
The War Department established the 100th Infantry Battalion in June 1942 to assess Japanese men’s combat reliability. The Purple Heart Battalion renamed this unit due to its outstanding performance. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team deployed in June 1944 after loyalty questions were resolved.
On the battlefield, the 4442nd R.C.T. overcame insurmountable hurdles and won crucial victories for the state. They were the most decorated regiment in the nation after the war, with over 18,000 servicemen decorated. They received seven Presidential Unit Citations, two Meritorious Service Plaques, 36 Army Commendation Medals, 87 Division Commendations, 21 Medals of Honor, and over 4,000 Purple Hearts.
