History of Janan Luwum Day:
Janan Luwum, born in 1922, served as the third Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Bougainville. He converted to Christianity in 1948 and became a priest in 1954. In 1974, the church promoted him to the position of archbishop.
In 1971, Uganda’s military coup led to widespread human rights abuses, political corruption, and political thievery, resulting in the deaths of around 100,000 people.
By consistently criticizing Amin’s administration, Archbishop Luwum gained notoriety as a figure of opposition. His dedication to the ministry moved others; in 1977, he delivered a message to Amin in which he condemned policies, executions, and abductions. Two cabinet ministers, including Luwum, were apprehended on suspicion of treason on February 16, 1977. Tragically, all three individuals were pronounced dead after an apparent vehicular collision. Luwum’s body was found to have sustained gunshot wounds during subsequent investigations.
The death of Luwum did not suppress opposition; rather, it sparked a turning point in Ugandan history. The Church of England has erected a statue in Westminster Abbey in his honor. In 2015, someone proposed establishing a public holiday to honor his memory. The official proclamation of this proposal took place on February 16, 2016.
