National Textiles Day 2024 (US): May 3 is National Textiles Day, and we are celebrating the vital role that textiles play in our everyday lives. We create textiles using a variety of natural and synthetic materials, which serve as the foundation for our paintings, clothing, bedding, and rugs.
Valley Forge, a leading pioneer in sustainable and eco-friendly textiles, is also the organization behind this delightful event. Imagine for a moment how different life would be without textiles. Our lifestyle, home furnishings, and apparel would be completely different.
National Textiles Day: History
Dyed flax fibers found in a cave in Georgia 34,000 years ago have influenced our existence. Humans protected themselves from the elements by wearing animal skin, leaves, and bark before textiles became common.
Spinning raw fibers into long, twisted skeins creates textiles. Weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, tatting, felting, bonding, or braiding these strands create fabrics. They become our clothes, bedding, furniture covers, and house rugs. Even our canvasses are fabrics.
Textiles are part of the fight for environmental sustainability in modern production. Valley Forge Fabrics strives to live and work sustainably. Sustainable fabrics have been their specialty for years.
In May 1977, Dan and Judy Dobin opened Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. A year later, they moved Valley Forge and their five children to New York. They started in hospitality in 1980 and never looked back. They sent hotels their first sample booklets in 1991 to help them choose upholstery textiles. Fort Lauderdale was the Dobbins’ next migration a year later.
Their first major FRESH product grouping, Fabrics Redefining Environmental Standards for Hospitality, debuted in 2007. They started National Textiles Day.
