National Margarita Day 2024: February 22 is National Margarita Day, honoring our favorite drink. In 1938, Mexico introduced the margarita, the ultimate drink blended with triple sec, tequila, and lime juice. Therefore, retrieve a shaker or a frozen margarita machine, or visit a nearby watering establishment to purchase a margarita. Whether ascending, descending, or standing on the rocks, one cannot err. Hello and welcome!
National Margarita Day’s History
Carlos “Danny” Herrera created the famous cocktail in 1938. He made it in his Baja California restaurant for Broadway legend Marjorie King, a dancer on “Ziegfeld Follies,” since she was allergic to liquor but not tequila. Our favorite drink was born.
Several people claim to have invented the margarita, including Herrera. In 1942, Mexican bartender Francisco “Pancho” Morales mixed the cocktail in Juárez, Mexico, before becoming a US citizen and working as a milkman for 25 years. Mexico’s official newspaper, Notimex, supports him.
The final story is the oddest. While on vacation in Acapulco, Mexico, “higher-class” Dallas resident Margarita Sames claimed to have invented the drink in 1948 for her visitors. Tommy Hilton, who knew Margarita, joined the event and added it to his hotel menus. Before he could take a breath, Jose Cuervo, representing the famous tequila company, claimed he had started advertising efforts in 1945 with the slogan “Margarita: It’s more than a girl’s name.” Everyone enjoyed the drink, regardless of its provenance.
Given the variety of margaritas, 76% of Americans like a cheap one. Replace triple sec with Gatorade in strawberry, peach, mango, and berry drinks, beer, and healthier options like slim margaritas and sporty cocktails. Getting the closest fruit, tequila, and triple sec and mashing it to “one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor” is irrelevant whether you’re at a bar, on the couch, or after an important meeting. Drink responsibly—T’kill’ya has been known to overdo tequila.

Furthermore, with the extensive selection of tequila, fruits, and sweeteners at our disposal, we eagerly anticipate the introduction of novel margarita flavors that will continue to elicit delight and surprise throughout the years.
Blended or served atop rocks?
It’s important to consider the brain chill element, even though blended margaritas resemble alcoholic slurpees. Although a margarita on the rocks is refreshing and liquid, it does require you to lick ice crystals to get the last drop. At the bar, it is a perennial conundrum and point of contention: blended or on the rocks? When will the answer become known? We guess that we will have to continue imbibing to find out.
